The 17. Armee was established on 20 December 1940. Initially they were providing security for the German/Russian frontier from 20 December 1940 through 21 June 1941. The 17. Armee was in existence for 1,600 days and served entirely on the Eastern Front fighting mostly in the southern sectors.
