This unit was originally formed on 4.21.41 from the 8. SS-Totenkopf-Standarteand the 10. SS-Totenkopf-Standarte. Originally the unit was known as theSS-Brigade (mot.), it was later renamed as the 1. SS-Brigade (mot.), and thenlater as the 1. SS-Infanterie-Brigade (mot.). After formation, this brigade served as a part of the Kommandostab-Reichsführung-SS, fightingfor nearly 30 months with Armee-Group “Mitte” in central Russia. In January of 1944, this brigade was formed into the 18. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Division “HorstWessel”. |
