The 2.Infanterie-Division (mot) was formed from the 2.Infanterie-Division on October 12th, 1937.
The 2.Infanterie-Division (mot) took part in the Campaign in Poland in 1939 and in France in 1940.
On October 5th, 1940 the 2.Infanterie-Division (mot) began conversion to a Panzer-Division, and on January 10th, 1941 it was officially redesignated as the 12.Panzer-Division.
