32.SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Division “30.Januar”

History

WW2 German 32nd SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-DivisionFormed on January 30th, 1945 at Truppenübungsplatz Kurmark from variousunits, including Kampfgruppe Schill and various Rekruten-Depots located in the regionof Kurmark. Because of the rapidly advancing Soviets forces and theincreasing decline of the overall situation on the Eastern Front at this point,elements of the division were formed and sent directly into combat againstthe approaching Soviets. One such unit was named Kampfgruppe Kurmark, laterrenamed 32.SS-Regiment, and still later, renamed again as the 87.SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Regiment.By February, 1945, the division had close to 12,000 men in its ranks from many varied sources. The division saw action fighting against theSoviets along the Oder River mainly near Frankfurt/Oder. The division wasdestroyed in the Halbe pocket, but part of the unit surrendered to the Americansat Tangermünde.
