The 5.Jäger-Division was formed in July of 1942 from the 5.leicht-Infanterie-Division while it was already serving on the Eastern Front. In late1942 and early 1943 the 5.Jäger-Division fought the Soviets in heavy fighting around Staraja Russa. The 5.Jäger-Division was then usedin Poland after the crushing defeat of Armeegruppe Mitte, and then laterfought in the defensive battles in Eastern Germany where it was destroyedby the advancing Soviets near the Oder front. The 5.Jäger-Divisionspent its entire life on the Eastern Front.
