The 5.leichte-Infanterie-Division was formed in November and October of 1941 from the 5.Infanterie-Division. The Division was formedas a low mountain warfare unit, and upon formation in November 1941 was sentto the northern sector of the Eastern Front to fight against the Soviets.While fighting in this region the 5.leichte-Infanterie-Division took part inthe battles to break the circle around the forces trapped in the DemyanskPocket. After fighting on the Eastern Front for a number of months it was thenrenamed as the 5.Jäger-Division.
