HistoryThe 9.Volksgrenadier-Division was formed in October, 1944 from Schatten-Division Dennewitzand the very few available remains of the original 9.Infanterie-Division. As part of General der Panzertruppe Erich Brandenberger’s7.Armee, LIII.Armee-korps, the 9.Volksgrenadier-Division participated in the failedArdennes offensive of December 1944, heavily engaged in the rear-guard fightagainst American forces in Luxembourg, and then later in southern Germany. In April, 1945 the decimated 9.Volksgrenadier-Division consisted merely of the divisional commander andhis HQ staff whom were seconded to the also exhausted 352.Volksgrenadier-Division as part of XIII.SS-Armeekorps. The last men of the 9.Volksgrenadier-Division surrendered to the Americans at Nuremberg onApril 30, 1945. Organization
As a general rule, formations which were refitted as Volksgrenadierunits took on the Volksgrenaider naming conventions. i.e. – 36, 57, and 116Infanterie-Regimenter of the former 9.Infanterie-Division becameVolksgrenadier-Regiment 36, Volksgrenadier-Regiment 57, andVolksgrenadier-Regiment 116 respectively. Integral divisonal components suchas Artillerie-Regiment 9 became Volks-Artillerie-Regiment 9, and so on, although in the case of the 9.Volksgrenaider-Division, the units of the divisiontook on only the name of Grenadier.
